Be warned:in this very rich environment where you can immerse yourself so completely, your emotions will become engaged -- and not everyone is cognizant of that. Among the many excellent features of SL, there is no auto-return on hearts, so be wary of where your's wanders...

In 763 BC the Assyrians recorded a solar eclipse that is later used to fix the chronology of Mesopotamian history. In 1300 the city of Bilbao, Spain was founded by by Diego López V de Haro. In 1844 Charles Goodyear got a patent for vulcanization, a process to strengthen rubber. in 1846 the Oregon Treaty was signed between the United States and Canada establishing the 49th parallel as the border from the Rocky Mountains to the Strait of Juan de Fuca [although on this day in 1859 there was an altercation because of a marauding pig]. In 1878 Eadweard Muybridge took a series of photographs to prove that all four feet of a horse leave the ground when it runs and creates the basis of motion pictures [In other words, he created the first flip book]. In 1934 the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was founded. In 1969 "Hee Haw" premiered on CBS and has found eternal life “pickin’ and grinnin’” in reruns.
Today the news story gathering headlines was about a tragedy in Walt Disney World – a toddler grabbed by an alligator. Although it is an awful happening, it is especially horrific [and thus getting so much attention] because no one expects to have this kind of problem when staying on site – you always feel safe in Disney because things are so clean and pretty. The posted signs did say “no swimming” but there wasn’t any warning about not going into the water and the child was playing in the waves right in front of the family when the alligator lunged. I always thought the warnings had more to do with the swampish nature of the water – this wasn’t a pool or park, the resort was on a natural lake and I was always worried about bacteria or leeches or something even in the canals, and was never particularly eager to take out a boat [not feeling comfortable with the possibility of being dunked].
It is something folks that do not live in the Sunshine State don’t think a lot about – both alligators and crocodiles thrive in Florida as it is their native habitat, and they are not the least bit intimidated by humans. Floridians know the dangers, but I am not too sure that they realize tourists tend to be completely oblivious. Even going to the Gatorland Zoo, where they stress these are the area’s alpha predators that needed to be treated with respect and caution, my kids both came home with shirts that said “send more tourists, the last ones were delicious” and we thought it was funny ….. Wildlife officials believe there are over a million alligators [and almost 20 million people], but in the past 68 years there have only been 383 documented alligator bites in the Florida with 23 fatalities. Not even the magic of Disney can overcome nature – they can try and control it, they can manage the way we interact with it, but they cannot make it go away. This particular wild beast saw an opportunity and took it.
All this to simply say that I can imagine being in my happy place, having something totally horrible and life-changing happening…..

Been a tough time in Orlando, neh?
