ON THIS DAY: In 497 BC the first Saturnalia festival was celebrated in ancient Rome. In 1790 the Aztec calendar stone was discovered. In 1903 the Wright brothers made the first controlled powered, heavier-than-air flight in the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1938 Otto Hahn discovered the nuclear fission of the heavy element uranium, the scientific and technological basis of nuclear energy. In 1957 the United States successfully launched the first Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In 1969 the US Air Force closed its Project "Blue Book" by concluding there was no evidence of extraterrestrial spaceships behind thousands of UFO sightings. Also in 1969 an estimated 50 million viewers watched singer Tiny Tim marry Miss Vicky on NBC's "Tonight Show." In 1989 the animated TV series "The Simpsons" premiered on Fox. In 2003 Space Ship One, piloted by Brian Binnie, made its first powered and first supersonic flight.

I am still trying NOT to read and react to the news as I search among my things for the Spirit of Christmas Present. Of course I haven’t minded stirring up controversy about math, but I have been trying not to offer any deliberate provocation. Among the things I read, but decided not to share on social media today:

A speculation about the evolution of human anatomy – we really don’t need more talk about size, now do we?
A story about the medical acumen of the ancient Egyptians – thought it wouldn’t interest folks
A review of Rogue One – not sure I agree with all of it
A tweet from Sense8 with the trailer for the Christmas special embedded – okay, just because I am a fan doesn’t make everyone around me one
A video of dogs doing the mannequin challenge – I would like to see them try that with cats….

The end of an era today in Hawaii – just a very sad story about another business closing down and jobs being lost, but not sure how progress can be stopped
