odds 'n ends for a Friday

Actually as much as I like fanfic, and have read quite a bit placed in MiddleEarth, actually written MarySue stories dealing with Star Trek, and B5, I have wondered about the legality.  Io9 nicely provided a very astute article about what can and cannot be done to live in the worlds others have created.  The problem is that some works cross the line and become knock-offs, and then there are legal repercussions.  There is another gray area that this article does not address -- the issue of full role playing sims and other builds in Second Life.  Unfortunately, the new CEO seems determined to treat SL as a game rather than a second life and making the prerequisite changes.
