In 363 Emperor Julian fled from the Persians up the Tigris and burning his fleet of supply ships behind him. In 632 Yazdegerd III took the throne as the Shah of the Persian Empire, but he was the last ruler of the Sasanian dynasty. In 1846, at the age of 54, Pope Pius IX begins the longest reign in the history of the papacy [32 years]. In 1829, Geronimo, the Apache leader and warrior, was born. In 1884 the "Switchback Railway", opened in New York's Coney Island amusement park. In 1933, President Roosevelt opened his New Deal recovery program, signing bank, rail, and industry bills and initiating farm aid. In 1961 Rudolf Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union ((I got to see him dance once, what an awesome sight that was!)). In 1963 A former textile worker from the Soviet Union, Lieutenant Valentina Tereshkova, became the first woman in space.
I am sure that I am not the only person who just doesn’t enjoy reading the news these days – there isn’t a single story, from politics to alligators to extinction to space to currency that doesn’t seem topolarize those who respond. I am not sure the happy medium exists anymore when even the use of a colloquial phrase becomes a matter of discussion and dissent as we need to correct folks that we don’t agree with. ((Why yes, I did just end a sentence with a preposition. Thank you for noticing!)).
When I joined Howard Rhiengold’s Brainstorms community a very long time ago, I was struck by the lack of lengthy rules and Terms of Service. He only had one rule for the community: “assume goodwill”. If you examine that statement for a bit, chew it over, ponder on it, you’ll find that all interactions are improved by adhering to that exhortation -- because you drop assumptions of intransigence or malice and accept other points of view, other perspectives are possible. Agreeing to disagree becomes an option rather than going into them VS us mode, assigning blame or rightness – and maybe, just maybe, we’ll all learn something instead of exercising our vocal cords.
