Did I mention it was FRIDAY?

Today is Friday, the much anticipated 6th day of the week and the end of the traditional work week, the 17th day of the 6th month, the 169th day of 2016, and:
  • National Eat Your Vegetables Day
  • National Flip Flop Day – remember when flip-flops were not acceptable street wear?
  • Stewart's Root Beer Day
  • Ugliest Dog Day
  • Work at Home Father's Day
  • World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought -- United Nations observance day with the purpose is to highlight ways to prevent desertification and recover from drought.  The theme for 2016 is:  “Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People.

In 1244, following the Disputation of Paris, twenty-four carriage loads of Jewish religious manuscripts were burnt in Paris.  In 1462 Vlad III the Impaler attempted to assassinate Mehmed II [no record of any neck biting].  In 1579 Sir Francis Drake claimed a land he calls Nova Albion (modern California) for Queen Elizabeth I.  In 1839 Kamehameha III issues the edict of toleration which gives Roman Catholics the freedom to worship in the Hawaiian Islands.  In 1885 the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor after being constructed in France, shipped overseas in crates, to be assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. In 1928 Amelia Earhart embarked on the first trans-Atlantic flight by a woman. In 1940, the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were occupied by the Soviet Union.  In 1944 Iceland declared independence from Denmark and became a republic.  1960 the Nez Perce tribe is awarded $4 million for 7 million acres of land undervalued at four cents/acre in the 1863 treaty.  In 1987 the dusky seaside sparrow becomes extinct as the last known bird dies.  In 2016 @NASAVoyager is 18 hrs 37 mins 55 secs of light-travel time from Earth (2016:169:120000:1L)
